Letter to College strikes a chord

LURGAN College recently received a letter that struck a chord with everyone involved in the education process.
Every child has the basic right to food, clothing and shelter and much has been done to improve this situation in African countries.
But every child is also entitled to the right of education, which provides a gateway to the future and to a better life. Unfortunately this is often overlooked and many children remain uneducated as a result.
Dominic Bourn, the Deputy Head of Chengelo Secondary School in Mkushi, Zambia, has sent a letter of appeal requesting old textbooks for a new African community school known as Miloso Secondary School in the village of Mkushi, Zambia.
The secondary school is funded by a Dutch Christian organisation called “World Servants” and aims to deliver good quality teaching to children who are unable to travel 40km to the nearest state school and therefore miss out on the important opportunity of education. The school also includes an education centre for adults. Miloso school is in desperate need for old textbooks to be donated from schools in County Armagh, from first year all the way up to A Level in a range of subjects including Mathematics, English Language and Literature, sciences and humanities.
Living in a country where education is not only free, but expected and often taken for granted, this letter helped to remind the pupils and staff of Lurgan College how fundamental and life changing education can be. The college is urging others to contribute to the appeal as the school’s Community Service group has done. The books will be collected together in County Armagh before being shipped via Medical Missionary News to Zambia.
