Shake off Christmas cobwebs
WRAP up in your winter woollies and work off those excess Christmas pounds at Lough Neagh Discovery’s Centres renowned ‘Woodland Workout’ this New Year.
Local residents can take part in this annual ‘workout’ which involves trimming back the hazel trees and the different varieties of willow found at the Craigavon Borough Council run Oxford Island Nature Reserve each Saturday morning throughout January from 10am.
This innovative trimming technique is called ‘coppicing’ and far from harming the tree, is an age old technique which revitalises and improves the health of the tree.
Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about the uses of willow, planting techniques and hints and tips on how to recognise different kinds of trees throughout the local area.
The old wood coppiced from the trees at Oxford Island Nature Reserve will not go to waste as it will be stacked and used as ‘habitat piles’ - making a refuge for small wildlife residing on the Island.
As the weather may be wet, appropriate waterproof clothing and footwear are required.
As equipment is limited it would be greatly appreciated if keen gardeners wishing to take part would bring their own ‘snappers’ and/or secateurs.
