Club scotches rumours

GLENAVON were on the lookout for a new manager in January 1974.

The Mourneview Park men had been linked with several managers, including former Glenavon player Billy Johnston of Crusaders, Bertie Neill of Bangor and former boss Jimmy McAlinden, Distillery manager at the time.

However, the club were annoyed by rumours they had been putting out feelers to other club’s managers.

Club secretary Roy Marshall hit out at the rumour mongers, who he said were certainly not doing anything to enhance the reputation of Glenavon.

He said: “Both the board and myself feel these suggestions could, unless discounted, put us in an embarrassing position with other clubs.

“We have made no approach whatsoever to any player or manager in the league and we have no intention of approaching anyone. The position has been advertised and the closing date is not until January 31.”
