Toilet ban on Sabbath
ANYONE coming into Lurgan on a Sunday was asked to cross their legs in January 1981.
It was announced that the public toilets in both Lurgan and Portadown were to be closed to save the council 3,000, as part of the attempts to keep rates increases at a minimum.
Councillor Tom French was unhappy about the closure, however, saying the toilets were needed, especially when visitors came into the towns, and they would receive a lot of complaints.
But councillor Alan Locke said Lurgan and Portadown were usually deserted on a Sunday except for people going to their place of worship and councillor David Calvert agreed, saying: “What people would come into the centre of Lurgan and Portadown on a Sunday for is beyond my comprehension.”
Councillor French’s proposal was defeated by 12 votes to four.
