Wasted 246 police hours

WHEN his girfriend left him an Aghalee man drew up a daft plan, a court heard in 1978.

But it resulted in three innocent people being arrested and the waste of 246 police hours.

The 19 year old telephoned a newspaper saying that a plan to ambush the police was under the till in the firm where he worked.

Police found what appeared to be a detailed plan of attack on Aghalee police station.

As a result three people, including two heads of the firm, were arrested.

A guard was placed on the station and 246 hours of police time were wasted.

The defendant’s name was found on the document but he denied any knowledge of the document. Later he admitted what he had done.

The court heard his actions stemmed from the fact that he had been given up by his girlfriend whom he loved very much.
