REHEARSALS began this week for a new play by local man Raymond Murray, whose previous production 'A Peace of History' played to enthusiastic audiences throughout the county.
Lurgan, Derrymacash, Armagh and Lislea all warmed to the humour, poignancy and nostalgia of A Peace Of History, the latter venue awarding the play Best Production at its 2007 drama festival.
This new production is set in the weeks before and after
the smoking ban became effective in April last year. ‘Who’s Gonna Stop Me?’ is the story of one man’s reluctance to accept that his habit of 30 years is no longer permitted in his favourite bar.
Playwright Raymond said: “Obviously I had to research this project thoroughly, visiting several bars to sample the reaction to the ban. Tough work, but it had to be done.”
Several familiar faces once again make up a very strong cast. Brendan Magee plays the lead role and Brendan’s CV in local drama is unmatched. Gerry Heaney, Geraldine Owens, Jackie Cullen, Gemma Mallon, Sinead Owens and Niamh Shannon are others who also featured in A Peace Of History, while Billy Carroll, Connor Smith and Ruairi Coleman are newcomers to the group.
“The play looks at the issue of passive smoking, but I’ve been careful not to preach. It’s a comedy and isn’t intended to pull at the conscience of smokers. I just enjoyed the variety of opinions that were voiced at the time, so hopefully the audience will enjoy my interpretation of the issue.”
Who’s Gonna Stop Me plays for three nights from November 28-30 in Lurgan Town Hall. Details of ticket outlets will be carried in the 'MAIL' closer to the date of the performances.
