Oscar predictions

THIS weekend is Oscar season and with the biggest awards ceremony of the year upon us, speculation is running wild.

Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’, which leads the pack with 12 nominations, looks to win Best Picture. It has fierce competition in the form of ‘Life of Pi’, ‘Amour’, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, ‘Les Misérables’, ‘Django Unchained’, ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ and my personal favourite, ‘Argo’.

Spielberg is also up for Best Director. I expect Ang Lee to win the award for the impressive ‘Life of Pi’.

I predict Daniel Day-Lewis to win Best Actor. A two time Oscar winner, Day-Lewis has received huge praise for his role as Abraham Lincoln. The Academy voters have historically favoured actors in biopics for this award and I believe this will be reflected in a Day-Lewis win. It is however, my opinion that anything but a Joaquin Phoenix win would be a robbery. In ‘The Master’, Phoenix gave the performance of the year.

The nominees for Best Actress are bookended by 85 year old Emmanuelle Riva (‘Amour’) and 9 year old Quvenzhané Wallis (‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’); respectively the oldest and youngest nominees ever. I expect Riva, who won at the European film awards and the BAFTAs, to get the nod.

The difficulty in predicting Best Supporting Actor is due to the immense talent in the category. Alan Arkin, Christoph Waltz, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Robert DeNiro and Tommy Lee Jones are all former Oscar winners and among the best working in film today. Hoffman, completely believable as a cult leader in ‘The Master’, is my pick to win.

Finally, Best Supporting Actress, which I believe to be a one woman race; Anne Hathaway for ‘Les Misérables’.

The 85th Academy Awards can be viewed at 1.30pm, this sunday night, on Sky Movies.
