ENVIRONMENT Minister Arlene Foster visited school children this week to sample their rubbish project.
Lurgan Junior High School year 10 pupils' 'Decisions, Litter, Animation' project highlighted the negative environmental impacts of litter and aims to persuade people to dispose of their litter properly.
The pupils designed wall murals from various
forms of litter found around the school and within their community, they also designed scripts and storyboards and created cartoons for computer animations to persuade people to stop littering.
MP, David Simpson made the trip with the minister to the school, principal Joe Johnston said it was good to see the minister and MP at the school.
He said: "It is good for school to have both the MP and the minister take time out from their busy schedules to come along to see the achievements of the year 10 pupils.
"They have worked hard on the project and learned the problems it brings and to have Arlene Foster and Davis Simpson come to see it shows how important an issue it is."
Minister Arlene Foster, in her first visit to Lurgan, said she was very impressed with the efforts the children had put into the projects.
She said: "There is a problem with litter in Lurgan as with other areas of people dropping litter especially after the weekends.
"One of the most effective ways to reduce the litter problem is to change the attitudes and behaviours of those people who, for whatever reason, drop litter onto our streets and public spaces instead of putting it in a bin.
“It is very encouraging to learn about projects by young people which are designed to stop people littering and thereby improve the quality of life in our local neighbourhoods and communities.”
