MOTORISTS in Donacloney have been seeing red after youths tampered with temporary traffic lights in the village.
Lights were erected in Main Street in the village while essential maintenance was carried out on water pipes.

But young people found a way to turn the lights at both ends of the street to red, causing problems for traffic travelling through the v
illage.

At one stage last Friday part of the street was closed entirely by workmen after police had ordered them to do so.

"It's bad enough that the traffic is having to travel down one side of the road but this clowning about is just idiotic," said one resident.

"I understand the need to do the work and to close half of the street but they would have been safer just closing the whole lot.

"Sometimes if you are pulling out of the shop it is impossible to see what way the traffic is coming and there is the potential for accidents - fooling about with the lights just makes things worse," concluded the resident.

"NI Water are doing pipeline works and they had installed temporary traffic lights in the area," a police spokesperson confirmed.

"Unfortunately youths in the area discovered a way to permanently turn the lights to red.

"NI Water have now replaced these lights with lights which cannot be tampered with."
