ELDERLY residents were complaining about drinking parties around Lurgan swimming pool in January 1978.
Pensioners at Lime Grove said they were being kept awake weekend after weekend by youngsters “drinking themselves silly.”

The RUC were to undertake extra patrols in the area, especially at weekends, in an effort to stamp out the problem.

And local councillors expressed concern over the availability of alcohol for the under-aged in the town.

Councillor Philip Black had received complaints about the issue and said: “It seems that every Friday and Saturday night, from about 10pm onwards, youths are gathering by the swimming pool in the park.”

The pensioner’s bungalows overlook the park at that point, which had become a popular meeting place.
