A WOMAN attempted to swim the lough back in 1929.
Miss Mercedes Gleitze made a second attempt to swim Lough Neagh from Maghery, County Antrim, a distance of 22 miles.

She left Antrim at just before 10pm on a Saturday night, and motored to Maghery, where she entered the water at just after 1am on the Sunday morning.

In the early part of the swim she was greatly hampered by a dense mist, but in spite of that she swam strongly up to mid-day.

After being 16 hours in the water it was noticed that Miss Gleitze was becoming weak, and, on the advice of her pilot, she changed her course and headed for Ardmore Point, where she landed at 9pm, after being 20 hours in the water.

This beat her previous longest time in the water by five hours.

After landing, Miss Gleitze was in a state of collapse, and was attended at a neighbouring house by Dr Thomas Marquess.

She was later brought by car to Antrim, where she had an enthusiastic welcome.

Miss Gleitze was accompanied on the swim by Dr Marquess, Mr William Heaney, and the engineer of the motor boat was Mr B Wallace.
