ANYONE coming into Lurgan on a Sunday was asked to cross their legs in January 1981.
It was announced that the public toilets in both Lurgan and Portadown were to be closed to save the council £3,000, as part of the attempts to keep rates increases at a minimum.

Councillor Tom French was unhappy about the closure, however, saying the toilets were needed, especially when visitors came into the towns, and they would receive a lot of complaints.

But councillor Alan Locke said Lurgan and Portadown were usually deserted on a Sunday except for people going to their place of worship and councillor David Calvert agreed, saying: “What people would come into the centre of Lurgan and Portadown on a Sunday for is beyond my comprehension.”

Councillor French’s proposal was defeated by 12 votes to four.
