THE closure of Parkside Snooker Club has been called a sad loss for the town.
The club is set to close in the next few weeks and will see between 200 and 300 members left without a club.

However, one pioneering community worker has said, from this bad news there is an opportunity to build for the future.

Former champions
hip snooker referee, Len Ganley, has been working with young snooker players in the area and is trying to re-establish a Lurgan league.

He said: "There are a lot of members we are trying to relocate into another club, but the fear is they could lose interest and stop playing altogether.

"The Parkside Club has had a lot of success over the years and it will be sad to see it go.

"There is a lot of talent out there and the aim now is to get them into other clubs - so that the kids don't lose interest and end up in the park drinking from their blue bags."

Len hopes to be able to offer young snooker players a place where they can go and play and develop their skills.

He continued: "I have been working with professional snooker players in England for years and they are keen to lend a hand and help us with our cause.

"We want to do more than just develop the kids' ability to play snooker, they can help me with charity fundraisers and we can work toward developing their personalities and making society a better place."
