TWO Lurgan girls performed before the biggest crowd of their lives when they sang at the switching on of the Christmas lights in Belfast on Tuesday night.
Local girls Claudia Zielonka and Meabh Carlin were among eight talented young singers who lit up Christmas after being selected to perform in front of an estimated 15,000 people.

Claudia, who recently took part in Craigavon’s Stars In Their Eyes c
ompetition, and 16-year-old St Michael’s student Meabh, who are both from Lurgan, joined Rhian Gourley (West Belfast), Rachel Pearson (Dungannon), Laura Palmer (Dunmurry), Gemma McNerney (West Belfast) and Nicole Quinn (West Belfast) to form the all girl group set to perform in front of thousands of spectators over the next few weeks.

The biggest event of those performances was at the Belfast City Council’s 'Christmas Light Switch On' where they sang their specially recorded Christmas song to an estimated crowd of 15,000 spectators.

The song the Young Star Christmas Group has recorded is a version of the Christmas classic 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree' which has been produced by local hitmaker Mickey Modelle at his County Down recording studio.

The local kids supported X Factor finalists 'Same Difference' on the night.

The eight young singers, all aged eight to 16, were selected from auditions held in Belfast earlier this month, which aimed to form Ireland's youngest pop group.

Hundreds of kids turned up on the day to try out for a place in the group but only seven young singers got the chance to join 'Citybeat Young Star Search 2008' winner Rachel Pearson for a place in the kids group.
