HOUSEHOLDERS doing battle with Saturday's floods were none too happy about the availability of sand bags.
Many of the flooded residents the 'MAIL' spoke to told how they were promised sandbags which never came or arrived in ludicrously small numbers.

It emerged at this Monday's council meeting that the Rivers Agency depot in Seagoe Industrial Estate had first run out of bags and then run out of sand.

Councillors said this was disappointing forward planning given there had been floods just a few days before and the extreme weather had been forecast.

Council was told how local business Norman Emerson Ltd had come to the rescue by supplying sand from its base at Derryadd.

The 'MAIL' heard from residents who scrambled to find whatever they could find to fill up with sand.

Shane McCluskey from Knockramer Meadows said: "We had pillow cases, curtains - everything we could find filled with sand to keep the water out."
