A suspicious approach to a child in Newry has caused something of a stir among Lurgan’s Facebookers - and it’s all down to both areas sharing a ‘Mourneview’.

It all began when a parent in Newry posted a warning for vigilance after a suspicious approach to her daughter in the Mourneview area of the city yesterday (Tuesday, November 24).

Obviously the reference to Mourneview caught a few around Lurgan out and the post was quickly shared across the town - the ‘MAIL’ also received messages about the warning which has prompted us to make the situation clear.

As you will discover from a careful reading of the post below the child was on her way to Newry High School - kind of a long walk from Lurgan’s Mourneview and a lot closer to Newry’s version.

The original post read: “Folks this morning my 13 year old daughter was walking to school close to Mournewiew when a car pulled up and drove alongside her and the driver asked her if she was going to Newry High (she was in her uniform) he said he lived in that area and asked if she wanted a lift, she said no and he continued to drive alongside her and asked her several more times if she wanted to get in the car, he drove off when they passed the entrance of a local business were he was visible to other people. I don’t know if this man meant anything sinister by his actions but he frightened my daughter who thankfully acted in the correct manner and contacted me immediately. This happened a five minute walk from several local schools in an area where you would see school children coming and going a lot, remind your children to take care when out and about.”
