Lurgan mum Aine Beatty has been voted the Lurgan Mail/Firmus Energy Person to be Proud of for 2014.
Aine and her family have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of Down Syndrome, indeed Aine set up the charity Downs and Proud.
Her son Jay has been hitting the headlines in recent months, first catching the eye of Glasgow Celtic’s Georgio Samaras when the side won the Scottish league title and then the Greek Football Association who wanted him as their unofficial mascot during the World Cup finals in the summer.
Aine, her husband Martin, Jay and his sister Olivia have been doing their bit to promote understanding of the syndrome.
She said: “Through Downs and Proud we want to increase people’s understanding of Down Syndrome. With that awareness comes understanding and acceptance that makes Jay part of the crowd.”
She said: “When Jay was born with Down’s Syndrome, I found that my local community was lacking a support group. As time moved on and more children in my area were born with Down syndrome,I knew that we all had common ground and felt we could benefit from sharing our experiences.”
