Community groups are being invited to apply for the ‘Pride of Craigavon’ awards - the last big event organised by Craigavon Borough Council before it merges with Armagh and Banbridge.

Hosted by the council and sponsored by Almac Group and Moy Park, these awards acknowledge and celebrate the work and dedication of community groups across the borough.

The inaugural awards attracted more than 60 nominations.

Groups can apply under the same nine categories as last year, and there will be a new category - Almac Pride of Craigavon Award. This category is sponsored by Almac and will be the ‘best of the best’ award, with one overall winner of the past two years chosen for this special recognition.

The other categories are Community (Large Group); Community (Small Group); Community Newcomer; Age Sector Community Award; Community Event Award; Creative Community Initiative Award; Contribution to Good Relations; Safer Craigavon Award; Contribution to Environmental Improvements in the Neighbourhood.

Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Colin McCusker said, “Community groups make an invaluable voluntary commitment and contribution to community life throughout the borough. So I urge you, don’t be modest, apply for the awards and get the kudos you deserve for all the hard work you put into your community to enrich the quality of life for residents.”

Almac Group’s chief executive officer Alan Armstrong said, “We are delighted to be part of this great event and even more so to be sponsoring this new, special category.

Community groups work tirelessly for their fellows and, as part of this community, we are proud to show our support and recognition for their fantastic work.”

Mike Mullan, Moy Park’s human resources director Europe, said, “The Pride of Craigavon is a wonderful opportunity for Moy Park to champion all the good work that is taking place throughout our borough and we are very pleased to be able to endorse these awards and help to give the worthy recipients the recognition they deserve.”

Applications will close at 4pm on December 19 and the awards will be presented in March. Forms are available from Susan Burns by calling 028 3831 1540 or emailing susan.burns@craigavon.gov.uk.
