The announcement of funding which will help secure a new building for young people at Clann Eireann couldn’t have come at a better time for the Lurgan club.

The Department of Education have pledged to part fund the building of a new fit for purpose youth club to the tune of £850,000. It comes as the club are celebrating the 60th anniversary of its youth club.

Chair of Clann Eireann Youth Club Dee McKerr commented: “This announcement is a good news story for Clann Eireann and the wider community of north Lurgan.

“It’s been the main talking point about the club in recent days. It is timely as this comes in the year in which we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of our youth club at St Colman’s Hall.”

He continued: “It is testament and recognition of Clann Eireann’s commitment to the young people of the area by all involved - management teams, leaders in charge, youth leaders and volunteers past and present.”

The club are hopeful the new facility for which a number of design options are being considered can be delivered by 2015 thus securing a youth and community provision and legacy of community service for the next 60 years and more.

Youth Club Chair Dee said: “We are pleased the Department of Education led by Minister O’Dowd has seen fit to recognise the need for this development and charged us with the continued delivery of services to young people from the area.”
