A single mum from Aghalee has been ordered to pay more than £16k or face jail after pleading guilty to benefits fraud.

Angela Jordan (47) of Meadowvale Court was handed a Confiscation Order to the value of £16,099 at Craigavon Magistrates Court on Friday following a case by the Social Security Agency Financial Investigation Unit.

Ms Jordan had claimed Income Support on the basis she was a lone parent and had no other source of income and Jobseekers Allowance on the basis she was unemployed.

During her claim to benefit the defendant failed to declare that she was employed. Due to her failure to report her true circumstances she received £13,546 in benefits she was not entitled to over a five year period.

The defendant on 1 July 2014 pleaded guilty to four charges of dishonesty.

At the confiscation hearing the Court granted a Confiscation Order in amount of £16,099 with a six month prison sentence in default of non-payment. She has until 15 July 2015 to satisfy the order.
