THE public have been warned to beware of scammers claiming to be from the Community Police.

The PSNI said it was warning local businesses to be on the look out for the scam.

“Unknown individuals are allegedly purporting to be from the ‘Community Police’ and are asking businesses to pay into a pot to support Community Policing,” said a PSNI spokesperson.

“This is NOT something that the PSNI would be involved in. We do not collect money for policing issues.

“Our advice to businesses remains the same as always. Never give out bank details to anyone over the phone; even your bank does not cold call you like this.

“Always be sure of whom you area giving money too. Genuine charities and collectors are only too willing to have their details checked. If you are in any doubt contact Police on 0845 600 8000 or make a brief call to QuickCheck on 0800 013 22 90.”
