When she was extremely drunk a 33-year-old woman tried to get into a moving car she thought was a taxi, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Wednesday.

And not only did she cause damage to the car she was left with a knee injury which required surgery.

Louise McCarron, Silverwood Leaves, Lurgan, was fined £200 for disorderly behaviour on February 4 this year.

She was also given a conditional discharge for two years for criminal damage and ordered to pay £126 compensation. The case had been adjourned from a previous court so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

The court heard that at 2pm police were called to a road traffic collision at Princess Way in Portadown.

The defendant was being assisted off the road by paramedics and her left knee was injured. McCarron was extremely intoxicated after drinking for a number of hours. She had tried to get into a moving car and fell into a parked car causing damage to the vehicle.

When she was later interviewed by police she denied any knowledge of the incident and accused the injured party of dangerous driving.

A barrister said that the defendant had an argument with her partner. He explained that she was on medication and started drinking before ending up at a house where she rang a taxi.

The barrister added that through the combination of the drugs and drink she thought the moving car was a taxi. He said that she was in a position to pay for the damage she had caused.

District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said this must have been a hugely terrifying experience for the lady in the car who was minding her own business, going to collect a child from school in the middle of the day.

He told the defendant that the pre-sentence report indicated she was a person who did not appear regularly before the court, was bright and intelligent but did have issues.
