Drinker abused the police in the street

An 18 year old Lurgan man was put on probation for 12 months when he appeared last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

His probation period includes the condition that he attends alcohol and drug counselling.

The court heard that at 9.25pm police on mobile patrol in Shankill Street, Lurgan, saw the defendant drinking out of a large bottle of Buckfast.

He was warned by officers about drinking in a public place and told them to f—k off.

There was further verbal abuse from McIlroy but when he was arrested and cautioned he calmed down considerably and apologised for his actions.

The case had been adjourned from a previous court so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

A solicitor for the defendant said there were various recommendations in the report and some level of probation would help deal with his alcohol consumption and anger issues.
