Had 124 prior convictions on his record

A 35-year-old man with motoring offences among his previous 124 convictions was given an insurance quote of £12,000 for a £900 car, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday.

David Martin Peter Somers, Edward Street, Lurgan, admitted using a car without insurance on June 5 this year.

He was fined £20 and banned from driving for six months. He was also fined £50 for not having a vehicle test certificate.

The court heard that police had followed the car to Dean’s Walk in Lurgan and three people were standing in a front garden.

Somers accepted ownership of the car but said that another person had been driving. There was no vehicle test certificate for the car.

Mr Richard Monteith, representing the defendant, said Somers had purchased the car for £900. It was seized by police.

He explained that his client had to pay £250 to get it back and then sold it for £800 when he got an insurance quote of £12,000.

Mr Monteith said Somers would be anxious to retain his licence to build up time in terms of his insurance and his licence was free of points.

District Judge, Mr Peter King, said Somers had 124 previous convictions and many were relevant.
