History was made in Waringstown this week when the first ever generation of children from the village attended nursery school.

Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson, who was involved in the campaign to bring a nursery unit to the village, visited the pupils and staff on the first day of the new unit based at Waringstown Primary School.

She said: “It was an absolute privilege for me to visit the first ever generation of Waringstown children to attend nursery school in the village.

“It was lovely to see the children playing away in the new unit and to meet the staff who will be looking after them during their first year at school.

“It is so important we retain and build on our network of successful rural schools which help children learn and grow close to their home and within their own community.”

She added: “As the only Upper Bann member of the Stormont Education Committee this is something which I have constantly lobbied for and am happy to see that Waringstown families are benefiting so much from these new facilities and will do for years to come.

“The people of Waringstown have fought long and hard to get their own nursery school and I am proud to have led that campaign, making the fight a central part of both my election campaigns, firstly to council and then to Stormont.

“The state of the art and eco-friendly facilities are a credit to the architects from the board and contractors who have worked so hard to have the new facility opened on time. I would like to praise the hard work and dedicated leadership of both principal and vice-principal, Gary Kennedy and Carl McCambley.”
