FLYTIPPING just metres from Craigavon Council’s Lurgan dump has been slammed by Upper Bann MLA Alderman Stephen Moutray MLA.

The pile of rubbish was dumped outside a field gate in a country road leading to the Amenity Site at New Line.

Alderman Moutray said: “This stretch of road has been particularly susceptible to flytipping over recent years with people depositing huge amounts of rubbish, and household waste along this stretch of road, which might I add leads to the Amenity Site.”

“This is having a detrimental effect on the landscape with rubbish strewn up and down the verges, across the road and in the neighbouring fields.

“It is time for the public to stop this act of vandalism that quite frankly costs the council huge amounts of money to clean up.

“Additionally it is time for council to take firmer action against those depositing of their waste unlawfully and to consider the use of CCTV cameras to try and ensure that those offending face the law.”

However, Craigavon council said over the past few years it’s Environmental Enforcement team had been ‘extremely proactive’ in detecting offenders at New Line and Glenavon Lane, Lurgan.

“So much so until this recent instance dumping in this area has significantly reduced.  We have issued fixed penalty fines to low level offenders for fly tipping and as recently as July a resident was fined £125 plus £97 costs for dumping six bags of domestic waste at Glenavon Lane,” said a council spokesperson.

“We are currently pursuing court action on at least one fly-tipping offence detected in this area of Lurgan recently and will continue to be extra vigilant.”

Craigavon Borough Council would also like to remind residents of the new winter opening hours for Newline Amenity Site which have commenced from October 1 and will continue until March 31 2013.

The hours are: Monday 9am-5.45 pm; Tuesday 9am-5.45 pm; Wednesday 9am-5.45 pm; Thursday 9am-5.45 pm; Friday 9am-5.45 pm; Saturday 9am-3.45pm
