Former Clan na Gael man knocked down
A WELL-KNOWN former Clan na Gael footballer is recovering in hospital after being knocked down by a car in William Street.
60-year-old Sean Lavery, also known around the town as ‘Buckshot’, suffered a broken leg and injuries to his head when he was struck by an Audi A4 shortly before 9pm on Friday night (February 3).
He was taken to hospital for treatment.
His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Mr Lavery was described by fellow club mates as a “key player” on the famous Clan na Gael team of the 1970s.
The Francis Street side was at its height in the 1970s, winning the Ulster Club Championship three times and once reaching the All-Ireland Club Final.
He was a regular on the squad throughout the decade, playing mostly at centre half-back.
Clan na Gael secretary Teddy Martin wished Mr Lavery a speedy recovery.
He said: “We are all very sorry to hear about this accident.
“Sean has been a great clubman and a great friend all his life, and we hope he gets well very soon.
“He was an outstanding footballer back in his day and was a key player on the squad throughout the 70s.”
Mr Martin added: “We wish him all the best with his recovery and we hope he gets well very soon.”
A spokesperson for the PSNI said: “It’s believed the area would have been busy at the time of the accident and we are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact us on 0845 600 8000.”
