Fraudster at work
A SICK fraudster is at work in the Lurgan area, gleaning funds meant for a young amputee.
The man is claiming to be collecting funds for a genuine event run by a supporter of the Meningitis Trust.
Alan Lewis plans to run from one coast of Northern Ireland to the other to raise money for the trust and the Oliver Lewis fund. Alan’s son Oliver lost both his legs below the knee to meningitis in May of last year.
The Meningitis Trust said the fraudster has been concentrating in the Lurgan and Banbridge area, contacting businesses for sponsorship using a fake sponsor form.
“It is almost unbelievable that someone would use this event to gain funds for their personal use,” said Anne Currie, Fundraising Manager for the Meningitis Trust in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
She added: “We are urging businesses and members of the public to be vigilant. Anybody legitimately collecting on behalf of the Meningitis Trust will have ID badges, correct documentation and when collecting with a tin or bucket, fully sealed containers.”
Anyone with any concerns can call Anne at the Meningitis Trust on 0845 120 2123.
