Meeting to discuss sectarian tensions

SINN Fein is calling for a meeting with local police, council officials and other councillors to discuss the rising sectarian tensions in the town.

Of particular concern is the activities in the area of Lurgan Park.

Councillor Johnny McGibbon said: “Within recent weeks there has been an upsurge in sectarian attacks within the area of Lurgan Park. Children in their pre-teen years have been attacked by gangs of thugs and this creates a scenario that could easily get out of hand.”

The councillor explained: “It is with the growing tension in mind that we are meeting with officials from Craigavon Borough Council, PSNI and local councillors to review the situation and assess what action can be taken to prevent an escalation of the trouble.”
