New lease of life for Woolies
VACANT and lonely Woolworths units are to be given a new lease of life, with work ongoing to refurbish the store.
Retail giants Peacocks, Iceland and Poundstretcher had all been linked to plans to take over the former Woolies lease.
But it will be the bargain chain store Poundstretcher that will breathe life into the empty shell in Lurgan.
Most of the Woolworths properties across Northern Ireland have been let just six months after the collapse of the well loved retailer, between them the new tenants have effectively replaced the 420 Woolies workers who lost their jobs.
Established retailers such as Peacocks and Iceland have agreed to move into the former Woolworths units at Coleraine, and Newtownards, while Matalan is understood to be eyeing up at least one idle shop.
Ethel Austin, one of Britain’s top value clothing retailers with a portfolio of 300 stores, is understood to have signed agreements to open in the vacant Woolies store in Portadown.
