Parking for residents is ‘sheer torture’

A NORTH Street resident, who has been forced to park his car in public car parks due to the fact visitors to the town centre park outside his home, has described the parking situation he faces as “sheer torture”.
The man, who did not wish to be named, said that he believed that he is one of a number of residents who find themselves unable to park outside their properties in the evenings and at weekends. A situation, which he continued, was exacerbated in the run-up to the Christmas season.
The resident explained; “There’s a elderly woman and I don’t know how she manages. I’ve a young child, and it’s difficult managing when you’ve got to her and a pram out of your car when you can’t park outside your own home. On one occasion I had to park in Church Walk car park and walk to the house and leave the car there because of the child, who I couldn’t leave at home by herself.
“It’s sheer torture. Once you drive away and return, your space has gone.”
He added: “It’s driving me up the wall. The last week, the last 10 days, have been really bad.”
The situation has prompted the man to complain to the Roads Service on the hope that a residential permit system may be introduced. “I sent them (the Roads Service) an email at the weekend but I haven’t heard anything back yet. I’m not at the stage yet when I’d approach a councillor but I will if it continues,” he insisted.
In response, a spokesperson for DRD said: “Roads Service is aware of concerns regarding parking for residents in this area. Any request for a residents parking scheme must be considered against our current policy and we will arrange to undertake the necessary surveys in the New Year.”
