Police warning on ‘too good to be true’ offers

POLICE in the local area are warning residents not to be taken in by offers which appear too good to be true.

One scam that is now being used across the province is the offer to purchase a laptop computer at a bargain price. The targets of this scam are often approached in car parks or even around shops.

Money is exchanged and the ‘laptop’ handed over, only for the buyer to realise that the bag contains heavy books (normally phone books or catalogues) rather than the computer they have paid for. By the time they realise they have been conned its too late and the fraudsters are gone, along with their money.

Constable Dunne warned: “People are being fooled into thinking they are getting a bargain when, in reality, they are being ripped off.

“I would advise anyone who is offered goods for sale in circumstances like this to walk away. Only purchase high value goods from a recognised retailer who can provide receipts and proof of purchase. Also, if you observe anyone offering goods for sale in this way please contact police immediately.”

If you believe you have been a victim of this type of crime, have information in relation to incidents of this nature or would like further crime prevention advice please contact your local police on 0845 600 8000.
