Rescue at last gasp
RESIDENTS of Lake Street feared the worst on Saturday.
With water creeping ever closer to their homes as the rain-filled hours ticked by they braced themselves for a repeat of the events of three years ago when their homes were destroyed by floods.
Anne Campbell told the 'MAIL': "My garden was only back in shape after three years. That's it ruined again. All the flowers need is a wee pull and they're out."
She was thankful the water didn't get into her house again and said the sandbags and pumping tanker arrived just in the nick of time.
Lake Street man Fergus Lennon said: "They need a new piping system in this area. We don't have a storm drain - the sewer drain and the storm drain are combined."
Siobhan McCoy and Henry McAreavie moved into the area two years ago so missed the last floods.
When the flooding began Siobhan and Henry's 18-month-old baby had a viral infection.
They needed to get to the doctor but were worried about leaving the house because of the flooding.
"We left it and went out to the doctor's on Sunday morning," said Siobhan.
Of the panic that ensued in the household she said: "We'd been promised sandbags but they didn't arrive until the last minute. It was a whole rush job. It was quite scary. Everything flashes before your eyes. With a newborn baby it make things harder."
