Stab victim had ‘one in ten chance’ of surviving injuries

A STABBING victim had to have his chest opened and his heart manually massaged on his way to hospital in an ambulance, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday.

And on arrival at the hospital a doctor gave him a one in ten chance of surviving.

These details were given by a detective constable during a bail application by 20 year old Brian O’Neill, of Portlec Place, Lurgan, who is charged with attempted murder on October 26 this year.

O’Neill appeared by way of videolink from Hydebank at Friday’s court.

Outlining the events the detective constable said the injured party was stabbed and fell to the floor inside a house.

On the way to hospital in the ambulance his chest had to be opened and his heart manually massaged, she added.

She told the court that a doctor gave the victim, who also suffered a fractured skull when he fell, a one in ten chance of surviving.

The detective said he had survived and doctors were stunned at his progress.

She was objecting to bail saying there was a risk of further offences and a bail address was close to relatives of the injured party.

A barrister for O’Neill said he had co-operated during his interview with the police and this appeared to be a single blow.

The detective added that O’Neill was found in the rear of the ambulance while the paramedics were inside the house.

District Judge, Mr Alan White, said O’Neill had a very limited record and released him on his own bail of £500, with one surety of £750, to live at an address in Lurgan.

Bail conditions include a 9pm to 8am curfew, reporting daily to Lurgan police station and an alcohol ban.
