Time to Talk with Santa Claus

SANTA Claus took some time off from his busy Christmas schedule to talk to the 'MAIL' this week.

"The excitement is building here in the North Pole as it's nearly Christmas - my favourite time of the year," said Santa.

"I can hear the elves tap-tapping away in the workshop next door, making all of those lovely Christmas presents. Even the reindeer know that Christmas is coming soon. I can see them all playing outside my window in the thick snow and there is Rudolph with his big red nose in the middle of them all."

Santa continued: "You will be happy to know that my sleigh is almost ready to go. My elves have cleaned and inspected it and will be soon adding all the presents.

"When I sat down to check my list - twice as always - I decided there was one name that had to come off it. That's the Lurgan Mail editor... and he knows why! If all the rest of you boys and girls have been good this year you've nothing to worry about.

"Be sure to go to bed early on Christmas Eve, because I only stop by when boys and girls are fast asleep. The reindeer and I will try to be very quiet when we land on your roof, and if you can, please leave us a little treat by the Christmas tree.

"And can you remember to put out any fires. I got my beard singed when I came down a chimney in Sloan Street last year!"

If you could trade places with anyone else for the day who would it be and why?

Just for a change I'd trade places with someone who gets Christmas off work.

Describe your perfect day...

Myself and Mrs Claus would have a lie in. Perhaps breakfast in bed and then we'd get all wrapped up and go for a sleigh ride around the world to check on how all the children were behaving. When we got back we'd have a go for a nice meal and maybe catch a movie - Gladiator with Russell Crowe is one of our all time favourites.

If you could change your job what would you do instead?

I wouldn't change my job for all the snow in Lapland.

Party animal or couch potato?

I used to be a bit of a party animal, but these days I'm more of a coach potato. Mrs Claus and I like nothing more than to curl up on the sofa and watch a good DVD box set. We're currently working our way through the third season of Prison Break.

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years time?

Hopefully I'll still be doing what i'm doing now - I'm just glad I have 364 days to recover!

Who or what has been the most influential force in your life?

My greatest inspiration in life is the laughter of children.

If you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you bring with you?

Rudolf, Dasher and Blizten - they'd have me back home in no time!

Would you describe yourself as competitive?

I only set myself one challenge a year - to get all the presents delivered on time. I haven't failed yet, so here's hoping this year is another good one. Mrs Claus says I should set myself a second challenge. Lose some weight!

Are you environmentally friendly?

All the toys the elves make are made from recycled materials and Mrs Claus is a whizz with the old three bin system, so yes, I'd say we're fairly good to the environment.

Could you bear to be parted from your mobile phone for a week?

Mobile phones?! We don't bother with them round these parts. Santa always prefers letters to emails or text messages.
