Time to Talk with Stephen Haughian

THIS week's Time to Talk packs a real punch as the 'MAIL' gets in the ring with Lurgan boxer Stephen Haughian.

Stephen turned professional at 19 and currently holds the Irish Welterweight Title which he won in February in Craigavon Leisure Centre by defeating Billy Walsh.

His dad Maurice runs the Phoenix boxing club and Stephen is trained by John Breen, who also trains Commonwealth Heavyweight title holder Martin Rogan.

The 24-year-old's intense routine sees him train two to three times a day. Coming up to fights it gets even more regimental with Stephen counting every calorie and checking his weight after every meal. He's got his mum Ethna to thank for keeping his diet in check.

"It's all or nothing," said Stephen. "The fight is won or lost before you get into the ring. It's the preparation."

Stephen has a degree in Sports Studies at Jordanstown and is a past pupil of Tannaghmore, St Paul's and St Michael's.

The Lavery Avenue man is the oldest of four siblings. He has two brothers, Ryan and Ciaran, who are both members of his dad's boxing club, and a sister, Shauna.
