Vandals destroy Bloom display

VANDALS went on the rampage in Derrytrasna at the weekend destroying the village's Ulster in Bloom display.

Flowers were planted up in concrete pots on Thursday evening, but the colourful display lasted just one night.

The Secretary of Derrytrasna Community Group commented: “This is the second year that this type of destruction has taken place. The Community Group now have to decide whether to continue taking part in the competition.”

She explained how the group had taken precautions this year given the previous year’s vandalism.

”We had wooden barrels before but they were too easy for them to lift,” said the group’s secretary.

“We thought we’d buy concrete ones so they wouldn’t be able to move them or overturn them like they’d done before. We tried to put them where they’d be near people’s houses so they could keep an eye on them. It didn’t make a difference. They smashed the pots to pieces.

“These pots were planted up on Thursday evening beside the Fisherman Sculpture at Lisnagade and by Friday night were smashed to pieces. It’s sad the mentality of these thugs that they cannot leave a few flowers alone. They’re full of drink and drugs at they weekend. They don’t know what they’re doing.”

She added: “It’s maddening that you make the effort and then this happens.”

Derrytrasna takes part each year in the Ulster in Bloom competition with flowers provided by Craigavon Borough Council and planted out by the community group to bring a splash of colour to the village.
