Car had been used for '˜drifting'

When he bought a car a 21-year-old man did not realise it was not in a roadworthy condition until the vehicle was inspected by police.

Desmond Anthony McConville, Charlestown Road, Derrytrasna, was fined £150 last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for using a vehicle which was in a dangerous condition on February 5 this year.

He was also ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that at 1.20am police discovered a vehicle on the Portadown Road which appeared to have broken down and was obstructing the nearside of the road.

It was unable to move because the front offside wheel was damaged and police noticed a number of other defects before seizing the vehicle.

The car had been lowered, there was a problem with the suspension, the rear tyres were a different size from the front tyres and two tyres were completely without thread.

This indicated it had completed specific manoeuvres such as drifting and it was not in a condition for driving in a straight on position.

Mr Pat Vernon, representing the defendant, said that his client bought the car last November and it had MOT so he had no reason to doubt its roadworthiness.

He added that McConville was a professional driver who worked for Tescos but was not a mechanic.
