New £5m Lidl store for Lurgan

Lidl are to build a new £5m store in Lurgan to replace the current Castle Lane outlet.

The international supermarket chain will be creating a new store at the retail park on Kitchen Hill.

It is expected the state-of-the-art new building will use the latest in cutting edge technology at the Pinehurst Retail Park.

Plus it is believed a further 20 new jobs will be created.

In a statement to the ‘MAIL’, a spokesperson for Lidl said: “Lidl are committed to investing over £5m into a new state of the art retail premises in Lurgan.

“Our new store will not only greatly enhance the customer experience but will also be kinder to the environment using both smart new technology and materials.

“We lodged our application on the 4th of May and to date feedback has been positive,” she said.

Meanwhile, DUP MLA Carla Lockhart has welcomed the planned new build of the Lidl store.

She said: “The store which is expanding into new premises in the Kitchen Hill area of the town is set to begin its development of some unoccupied retail units and also some new build facilities.

The Upper Bann MLA said, “This is a very welcome boost to the Lurgan area. Lidl have been rapidly growing their presence in Northern Ireland and doing so in conjunction with supporting local producers.

“Not only are our farmers benefitting from this but given Lidl market themselves on their quality and value for money it will be welcomed by consumers also.

“The site where there are already some premises in use will benefit from the additional footfall and it will make use of some of the pre existing retail units.

“I am delighted that Lidl have chosen to use this area to build their new store as there is ample car parking on site and it is within easy walking distance of the town.

“I have met with representatives of Lidl and it is anticipated that this will be approximately a £5million spend and will be similar in nature to their new Banbridge store.

“Additionally it will create a further 20 jobs which will be a welcome boost for the area.

“I have given a commitment to help them integrate into the community surrounding their new store and will be working with them to ensure that this investment happens in the very near future.

“It is anticipated that this year will see out the planning proposals and that the sod will be cut in the later part of the year.

“I am also discussing with them the site which they will be vacating in Castle Lane given that they will be leaving this following the new build.”
