Debbie Dowdeswell has been running the Connect Cafe at the Emmanuel Church for the past three years. The mum of two says she got involved in the cafe because she has a “heart for people”. Debbie’s dad Philip Emmerson is Pastor at Emmanuel, she says “I grew up in those circles of wanting to help people and reaching out to my community.”
Connect Cafe is all about reaching out to the community, not just disadvantaged people but people who have experienced loss of a loved one and just need someone to talk to. The cafe runs every Wednesday morning from 10am-12pm and numbers have grown to 60 people.
Debbie said: “It is something I love to do. Connect Cafe is about being there for people, just having a cup of coffee and a chat with someone who is lonely can make all the difference”
Her husband is very supportive of the work she does and often lends a helping hand, a plumber by trade he has often been tasked with fixing a boiler or two of the cafe’s many customers.
