He denied four charges, including possession of explosives with intent to endanger life and possession of ammunition with intent.

A previous bail hearing heard a bottle of liquid mercury was found in Mr Mackle’s rucksack when he was arrested.

Twenty rounds of ammunition were also found. Mr Mackle had been on a motorcycle when he was stopped.

The bail hearing was told by a prosecutor lawyer that similar substances to the liquid mercury had been used in the past to make tilt switches for improvised explosives and booby-trap devices.

After entering the not guilty pleas on Wednesday, Mr Mackle was remanded back into custody.

A provisional trial date has been set for the end of April.
