Man warns of bike dangers at lakes

A man has warned of the dangers of collisions between trail bike riders and pedestrians at Craigavon Lakes after an incident on Sunday morning.

The local resident, who has a heart condition and walks regularly, said he saw three mountain bikers burst from the trail area at high speed onto the path used by walkers.

He added, “A woman pushing a young baby had just passed the same spot. There is no way she would have been able to see them coming out. Someone is going to get seriously hurt.”

A spokesperson for ABC Council said the vast majority of people who use the off-road trail are considerate towards others users but “it would seem that there are a small minority of users who do not feel the need to conduct themselves in a considerate and safe manner”.

She said, “The off-road trail was professionally designed, is clearly signposted and the associated literature clearly states that cyclists must control their bicycles and be considerate to other users.

“Council will of course take this opportunity once again to review the signage.”
