A nine-year-old pupil of St Mary’s Primary School Derrytrasna is flying high after winning a top art competition.

Meabh McCann is on cloud nine after winning the Aer Lingus art competition.

The Primary Five pupil was one of hundreds of children across the province who were tasked with submitting a design for a new uniform for Aer Lingus’ pilots flying Green Spirit – the Aer Lingus aircraft with a dedicated livery featuring Irish Rugby stars to mark the airline’s partnership with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).

Winner Meabh will take her class and teachers to London for the trip of a lifetime, courtesy of Aer Lingus.

The class will enjoy a trip on the London Eye. They will also have the chance to visit the Sea Life London Aquarium and then they will be given the rest of the day to explore the world’s top fashion capital.

Meabh said: “I screamed when I found out, I was so happy. I wanted to incorporate a lot of green into my design as that is Aer Lingus’ colour and a little bit of navy as well, as pilots often wear that colour. I am so excited about going to London as I’ve never been before.”

Mrs Sarah Coleman Primary Five teacher at St. Mary’s told of the excitement in her class when she revealed that they had won this year’s competition saying, “We are genuinely over the moon that we have won the competition and delighted for Meabh, she put a lot of thought and effort into her design.

“We are really excited at the prospect of planning our trip to London and would like to thank Aer Lingus and everyone else involved in the competition for making it possible.”

Principal, Mrs Joan Aldridge, said: “This is a really big deal for us being such a small rural school. We are so proud of Meabh!”

Choosing the eventual winner was not an easy job but the judges decided unanimously that Meabh’s design was outstanding.

Andrea Hunter, Business Development Manager at Aer Lingus NI was very impressed with the winning entry. She said; “We were delighted to receive over 100 entries. It was a difficult decision but Meabh’s design was very creative and we could just imagine our pilots actually wearing her creation. The competition has given the children a chance to showcase their talents to a wider audience, and we are really proud to have helped them achieve that.

“Congratulations to Meabh and St. Mary’s Primary Five students, our lucky winners!”
