Local people are being warned to be on their guard for an email scam which claims to be from internet payment company PayPal.
Sinn Fein MLA John O’Dowd said, “The email came to light after it was sent to a local woman who became suspicious when she noted the link asked for her bank details.” Pay Pal confirmed it was a bogus and they are investigating.
Concluding Mr O’ Dowd said: “With so much shopping now taking place over the internet the fraudsters are trying to catch people off their guard and trick them into returning bank information.
“However, you should never ever pass such information on to an unsolicited email or phone contact. Always contact the company through a trusted number or email and not the one supplied in the original email to you.
“Undoubtedly, a quick check by the woman in this case prevented money being stolen from her bank account.”
