Public disorder in William Street condemned

PUBLIC disorder in Lurgan’s William St, during which police broke up a number of fights and made several arrests, has been condemned.

Local SDLP Cllr Declan McAlinden said sooner or later someone is going to get hurt.

Four people have been reported by police for public order offences.

An 18 year old female, 16 year old male, 20 year old male and 23 year old male were reported following disorder in William Street.

According to the PSNI, a patrol observed a fight in progress around 12.45am on Sunday, March 31.

Officers attempted to separate all parties involved and detained a male and female. The woman assaulted a police officer. Others involved ran off and police gave chase, detaining a 23 year old man. A third man was detained after assaulting two other men.

SDLP Cllr Declan McAlinden said: “I would like to condemn those who were involved in an incident on March 31 in William Street.

“Unfortunately incidents like these occur late at night and in most cases when too much drink has been taken and sooner or later someone is going to be seriously hurt !

“I would like to commend the Lurgan response team who were able to apprehend those involved and indeed is reassuring to know that they were able to get the situation under control fairly quickly especially when hundreds would have been leaving night clubs in that area around that time.”

Con McIlroy, Lurgan Response, said: “Assaults and disorder have no place on a night out and this should serve as a warning to those intent on causing trouble that we are there to prevent this and bring those responsible before the courts.

“We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy a safe night out and we will continue to patrol nightlife areas in Lurgan to prevent disorder and encourage everyone to behave sensibly.”
