Local swimmers went the extra mile - well a mile at least - for charity at the weekend.

They staged a sponsored mile swim to raise money for Heartbeat NI and Portadown Swimming Club.

The event was organised by King’s Park Primary School pupil 11-year-old Lillie-May Ruddy whose young brother Leon suffers from heart problems.

Indeed Leon also took part in the swim - even though he has only been swimming for a few months.

Lillie-May’s mum Petra explained that initially it was only going to be Lillie-May doing the swim but when they spoke to a coach at the club about the plan he suggested other members of the club and coaches would also take part.

Around 15 or 16 people took part said Petra, and everyone enjoyed their day.

At present they are in the process of gathering in the money raised but, Petra said, it was looking like they would hit a total of £1,000.
