VOLUNTEER Now, the lead organisation for Volunteering in Northern Ireland, have recognised Craigavon Borough Council’s support for volunteering in the area as part of the European Year of Volunteering 2011.

Wendy Osborne, Chief Executive, Volunteer Now said: “We have received a most positive response from councils across Northern Ireland during the Year.

“As part of the legacy of the European Year of Volunteering, we are delighted that Antrim Borough Council have endorsed the importance of volunteering by valuing the positive contribution made by volunteers to creating a vibrant community life and recognising that such civic engagement empowers individuals and develops communities.”

Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Alan Carson said: “I am passionate about volunteering within local communities. I recently learned that 21% of the population in Northern Ireland are currently recognised as volunteers. This is great, but I’d like to really encourage people from all walks of life to give it a go, because we need more help.

“I want to inspire people and remind them that volunteering is open to everyone, and there are lots of ways to get involved.”
