CLANN Eireann’s under 16s did just about enough in a wind assisted first half to land this season’s U16 North Armagh title against town rivals St Peter’s last Sunday.
Both sides pulled out all the stops considering that the early morning rain and
the continuous wind made the conditions difficult the football was brilliant but it was Clann Eireann’s defensive strategy employed during the second half and their capability to counter attack which saw them shoot the last three points of the game.
The Whites trailed 1-7 to 1-2 at the break and got a dream second half start when Fergal Moore capitalised on a defensive deflection to knock the ball home. St Peter’s continued to press and got within a point of their Shore Road rivals with just nine minutes left but the Clanns had other ideas, with Michael Beattie finding the net.
The Clanns camped in their opponents half in the first quarter. Points from Andy Nugent and some great scoring from former St Paul’s player Barrai Seeley set up a five nil lead before Fergal Moore and Conor Lavery hit Clanns last point of the half - but had they done enough?
St Peter’s shot the next four points, Fergal Moore, Conor Lavery, Niall McConville and Caolin Campbell put their side within a point of the eventual winners. But Michael McConnell. Barry Seeley who was the games top scorer and Niall Patterson put four between them at the end despite finishing with fourteen players.
