THE Clann/Linen Green recently held the Lurgan Criterium sponsored by The Classic Mineral Water Company.
The senior race saw a field of 40 riders and the weather stayed dry for what was an all out blast around the short circuit comprising the Lurgan streets of Kitchen Hill, Alexandra Square, Union Street and Hill Street. The pace was very high from the
off with the average speed for the first few laps reaching 32 mph.
John Heverin was riding his first Crit for the Lurgan club but found the pace extremely tough and had to pull out..
Michael Murray and Thomas Martin were the other Clann/Linen Green riders taking part and were well up in the positions coming up to the last five laps.
Peter Hawkins won the race for his Usher IRC team in a sprint finish from Simon Williams of Juiced Orchard and Sean Downey of Banbridge CC. In the under 12 race, Declan Mulholland had a great 2nd place and his sister Ciara scoring a 3rd in the under 14’s.
Two days later on Sunday, The Clann/Linen Green finished off their very busy weekend with The Classic Mineral water Tour of Armagh.
The Clann had five riders lining up with the two Grimes brothers tackling the race for the first time. .
By the time the race had reached the first KOH at Lisnadill, a few had taken their opportunity negotiating the streets through Armagh city and a small group had managed to escape. Taking the first KOH competition was Simon Williams of Orchard Wheelers as the race then headed for Keady Mountain and the second climb of the route. Adam Armstrong of Eurocycles was first over to take the second KOH and the small break he shared with his teammate, Ryan Conor continued to push on towards home.
Another break from the chasing bunch managed to escape on the descent of the mountain and The Clann/Linen Green’s Michael Murray and Thomas Martin were in there with seven others. As they passed through Keady town, Michael Murray attacked and got himself a gap. He took another rider with him but by the time he reached Portadown he had been hauled in again by the chasers.
However Thomas Martin was still in there and finished the top Clann/Linen Green rider in 11th. The winner of the race was Adam Armstrong of Eurocycles with his teammate Ryan Conor in second.
Once again The Tour of Armagh has proved to be a great success for The Clann/Linen Green and without the support they receive from the various parties it would just not be possible to run the race. The Classic Mineral Water Company, Linen Green and Michael Murray’s Monumental Sculptors are the main sponsors
All at The Clann/Linen Green would like to express their deepest condolences to the clubmates, friends and especially family of Maryland Wheelers Davy McCall, who was sadly killed in a collision with a car while in a club race last Thursday evening. His loss is a large one to cycling.
