Lurgan BBOB 3
Portadown BBOB 3
LURGAN BBOB hosted derby rivals Portadown BBOB and were unlucky not to grab the win after conceding a late goal.
Lurgan made the worst possible start when a harmless ball was spilled by returning goalkeeper Aaron King, this allowed the Portadown attacker to score from close range.
Following a stern half time team talk Lurgan upped their play in the second half and at last began to threaten.
Around the hour mark, the home side introduced young substitute Andrew Smyth and changed to a more attacking 3-5-2 formation.
Five minutes later Lurgan got their reward when Smyth centered the ball for Richard Ferguson to slot home.
However, within minutes Portadown restored their lead when their right winger sliced his cross fortuitously into the net off the crossbar.
More good work by Smyth out right then saw the hosts draw level as he crossed this time for runner Matty Greer to drill home.
Late in the game Lurgan’s Derek Wilson won an important header on the halfway line that saw the ball fall to Mark Russell who worked it to runner Ferguson, who expertly shot past the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area to complete his brace of goals and put his team 3-2 ahead.
The visitors responded with just a couple of minutes left when their attacker fired home an unstoppable shot from just inside the penalty area.
Special mention must go to young substitute Andrew Smyth in setting up two goals and to double goalscorer Richard Ferguson.
Lurgan BBOB would thank McKerr Home and Garden, Union Street, Lurgan, for their matchday sponsorship.
